Bringing you the latest news in the trucking industry!

The Angry Ex-Owner-Operator Syndrome.

You know the guy.

He owned a truck…

For about six weeks.

Now he’s been an internet trucking expert for the last eight years.

Every carrier is a scam.

Every broker is a thief.

Every dispatcher is an idiot.

Every owner-operator is lying.

Every successful trucking company is somehow stealing from drivers.

Funny how that works.

The Career Timeline

It usually goes something like this.

Step 1

“I don’t need anybody telling me what to do.”

Step 2

Buys a truck.

Step 3

Discovers trucking is actually a business.

Fuel.

Insurance.

Maintenance.

Cash flow.

Taxes.

Load planning.

Deadhead.

Negotiation.

Claims.

Compliance.

Equipment.

Risk.

Turns out there’s a little more to it than holding the steering wheel.

Reality Arrives…

The first month is exciting.

The second month is confusing.

The third month introduces repair bills.

Now the market isn’t fair.

Fuel is too expensive.

The brokers are crooks.

Dispatchers don’t know anything.

Receivers are stupid.

DOT is corrupt.

Customers don’t pay enough.

The truck keeps breaking.

At some point…

It’s impossible that every single person is the problem.

Then Comes the Facebook Degree

The truck is gone.

Maybe repossessed.

Maybe sold.

Maybe parked forever.

But something remarkable happens.

Instead of learning…

The former owner-operator earns a doctorate in Facebook Comments.

Now every trucking video requires immediate correction.

“$8,000 net?”

Impossible.

“Dry van is dead.”

“Only reefers make money.”

“Only flatbed makes money.”

“Only oilfield.”

“Only dedicated.”

“Only government freight.”

“Only my cousin’s friend’s neighbor knows the real market.”

Apparently every market works…

Except the one you’re talking about.

The Universal Explanation

There’s another fascinating pattern.

Whenever a company is successful…

There has to be a secret.

“They’re stealing.”

“They’re lying.”

“They’re hiding deductions.”

“They’re foreigners.”

“They’re Russians.”

“They’re scammers.”

“They’re too good to be true.”

It’s amazing.

People will investigate your accent…

Before they’ll investigate their own business decisions.

The Two-Week Legend

Sometimes reality is much less dramatic.

A driver joins.

Runs two loads.

Burns enough fuel to invade a small country.

Misses appointments.

Damages equipment.

Needs help every day.

Doesn’t answer the phone.

Complains about every dispatch.

Quits after two weeks.

Then…

Becomes an internet whistleblower.

“THEY STOLE MY MONEY!”

No…

You generated a settlement.

The settlement just wasn’t what your imagination generated.

There’s a difference.

The Industry Isn’t Perfect

Let’s be fair.

There are bad carriers.

Bad brokers.

Bad dispatchers.

Bad contracts.

Bad lease-purchase programs.

Bad actors exist everywhere.

Nobody is denying that.

But here’s the difference.

Experienced owner-operators learn to identify them.

Inexperienced ones assume everyone is one.

That’s an expensive mindset.

Here’s the Part Nobody Likes

The trucking industry doesn’t owe anyone success.

It offers opportunity.

Opportunity comes with responsibility.

Nobody can learn the market for you.

Nobody can negotiate for you forever.

Nobody can manage your expenses while you argue in Facebook comments.

The market rewards people who adapt.

Not people who complain the loudest.

The Quiet Operators

Meanwhile…

Thousands of owner-operators quietly go to work every morning.

They fuel smart.

They negotiate.

They manage costs.

They build relationships.

They ask questions.

They improve.

They don’t spend six hours a day proving strangers wrong on Facebook.

They’re too busy running a business.

A Simple Question

The next time you see someone claiming,

“Nobody makes money.”

Ask yourself something.

If that’s true…

Why are thousands of owner-operators still buying trucks?

Why are successful fleets still growing?

Why are experienced operators staying in business year after year?

Maybe…

Just maybe…

The people who couldn’t make it aren’t always the best source of advice on how to make it.

Failure deserves respect when it teaches.

Failure becomes dangerous when it becomes a personality.

At Voyager, we don’t expect anyone to believe us because of an advertisement.

We encourage drivers to ask hard questions.

Talk to our owner-operators.

Look at the numbers.

Challenge the assumptions-including ours.

Because successful businesses aren’t built on internet comments.

They’re built one profitable load at a time.

🚛 BIG MIKE’S FREIGHT REPORT

June 8-14, 2026

The Freight Market Just Keeps Humbling the Internet

Every Monday the internet gathers for another episode of…

“This Is Why Trucking Is Finally Dead.”

Different YouTuber.

Different Facebook expert.

Same prediction.

Yet somehow… trucks continue moving, drivers continue getting paid, and dispatchers continue ruining brokers’ weekends.

Let’s look at what actually happened.

💰 Reality Beats Opinions

While social media was writing trucking’s obituary, Voyager trucks were quietly stacking solid freight.

A few highlights:

🔥 Hot Springs, AR → Charlotte, NC
1,637 miles
$6,500 🔥 North Las Vegas, NV → Orlando, FL
2,250 miles
$6,600 🔥 Marianna, FL → Amherst, NY
1,137 miles
$5,200 🔥 Goodyear, AZ → Tullahoma, TN
1,712 miles
$5,200 🔥 Greenville, MS → Boca Raton, FL
1,024 miles
$4,500

Not exactly “take whatever you can get” freight.

🦄 Freight Unicorn of the Week

Every week there’s one load that makes owner-operators spit out their coffee.

This week…

New Castle, PA → Springfield, VA

297 miles.

$1,900.

$6.40 per mile.

Close behind…

Middleburg, FL → Tifton, GA
$6.36 per mile. Carlisle, PA → Pittsburgh, PA
$6.32 per mile.

No… this is not the new market.

No… your dispatcher isn’t hiding these from you.

These are Freight Unicorns.

Emergency freight.

Customer problems.

Last-minute panic.

Basically… somebody else’s disaster became somebody else’s paycheck.

Take the screenshot.

Enjoy the moment.

Then get back to reality.

🌴 Florida Still Refuses To Cooperate

Every year somebody announces that Florida freight is impossible.

Funny.

This week we hauled freight from Florida into Indiana…

North Carolina…

Ohio…

Mississippi…

Texas…

Alabama…

Virginia…

New York…

And plenty of freight came right back.

Florida isn’t magic.

Florida isn’t terrible.

Florida simply rewards carriers that actually know what they’re doing.

🤡 Facebook Freight University

According to the comments section…

“The brokers have won.”

“Rates are collapsing.”

“Sell your truck.”

Meanwhile…

$6,600 Las Vegas → Orlando.

$6,500 Arkansas → Charlotte.

$5,200 Arizona → Tennessee.

$5,200 Florida → New York.

Somebody forgot to tell the freight.

🏆 Dispatcher Home Run

Our favorite load this week wasn’t the highest-paying.

It was one of the smartest.

Donalsonville, GA → Suffolk, VA

730 miles.

$3,100.

$4.25 per mile.

That’s the kind of freight that quietly pays truck payments while everyone else is busy arguing on Facebook.

🎯 Big Mike’s Take

Here’s the problem.

Too many owner-operators judge the market by the last bad load they saw.

Professionals judge it by the next good load they’re waiting for.

There’s a difference.

The impatient truck is always busy.

The disciplined truck is usually profitable.

This market isn’t rewarding luck.

It’s rewarding planning.

Relationships.

Positioning.

And knowing when to say…

“No thanks.”

The freight market isn’t dead.

It’s simply become less forgiving of bad decisions.

Stay loaded.

Stay profitable.

And remember…

Hope is not a dispatch strategy.

The Owner-Operator Who Knows Everything (Except What’s Actually Happening)

Every trucking Facebook group has one.

Every YouTube comment section has one.

Every truck stop has one.

He watches a three-minute video…

Immediately becomes the industry’s leading expert.

You could post your actual settlements.

He’ll explain why they’re fake.

You could show bank statements.

Photoshopped.

You could livestream the entire week.

“It’s different where I run.”

You could literally invent teleportation…

“Back in 2017 that wouldn’t have worked.”

The Hammer Theory

There’s an old saying:

To a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

The trucking version?

To a driver who’s been getting beat up for years…

Every carrier must be beating up drivers.

To someone who can’t imagine netting $7,000…

Nobody else can either.

It’s not evidence.

It’s projection.

The Reality Filter

Here’s something fascinating about the human brain.

It doesn’t just reject information.

It rejects information that threatens its worldview.

If you’ve spent ten years believing nobody can consistently make money hauling dry van freight…

Someone making money doesn’t become interesting.

They become impossible.

Your brain has already reached its verdict.

Now it just starts gathering evidence to support it.

“I’ve Never Seen It…”

One of the funniest arguments on social media is:

“I’ve never seen that.”

As if personal experience defines reality.

I’ve never seen Antarctica.

Doesn’t mean penguins are government propaganda.

I’ve never owned a Bugatti.

Pretty sure they still exist.

Your experience matters.

It just isn’t the entire trucking industry.

Experience Is Valuable…

…Until It Becomes a Prison.

Experience teaches lessons.

Good operators constantly update those lessons.

Bad operators defend them forever.

Markets change.

Technology changes.

Customers change.

Strategies change.

Some people adapt.

Others proudly announce,

“I’ve been doing it this way for 25 years.”

Sometimes that’s wisdom.

Sometimes that’s simply a very long time doing the same mistake.

The Secret Club That Doesn’t Exist

Some people honestly believe successful carriers have access to a secret load board.

A secret broker list.

A secret customer database.

A secret handshake.

The truth is much less exciting.

Successful companies usually do a thousand little things better.

Better planning.

Better negotiation.

Better timing.

Better relationships.

Better decisions.

That’s a terrible conspiracy theory.

Because it’s boring.

The Internet Expert

Social media rewards confidence.

Not accuracy.

The loudest comment isn’t automatically the smartest.

In fact…

The people actually making money are usually too busy moving freight to argue with strangers all day.

Meanwhile…

The guy writing a five-paragraph explanation about why success is impossible…

Has somehow found unlimited free time.

Curious.

The Difference Between Skepticism and Cynicism

Healthy skepticism asks:

“How are they doing it?”

Cynicism says:

“They’re lying.”

One question makes you smarter.

The other keeps you exactly where you are.

Here’s the Funny Part

Nobody says every owner-operator is netting $8,000 every week.

Nobody says every market is great.

Nobody says trucking is easy.

But if hundreds of owner-operators are quietly doing something…

Maybe…

Just maybe…

Before declaring it impossible…

Ask what they know that you don’t.

Because the fastest way to stop learning…

Is convincing yourself you already know everything.

At Voyager, we don’t ask anyone to believe us because of flashy marketing.

We ask them to look at results.

Talk to the drivers.

Ask questions.

Challenge us.

Healthy skepticism builds better businesses.

Ego builds better comment sections.

There’s a difference.

🚛 Big Mike’s Freight Report

June 1-7, 2026

The Freight Market Refuses to Die (And Apparently Nobody Told Florida)

Every week trucking experts predict the market is about to collapse.

Every week owner-operators call us asking if they should panic.

And every week some poor dispatcher somewhere accepts a 1,400-mile load for $1.65 per mile because “it’s heading in the right direction.”

Meanwhile…

Voyager trucks spent another week quietly committing acts of freight violence.

💰 The Number Everybody Actually Cares About

Forget economics.

Forget freight futures.

Forget the guy on YouTube recording from his truck bunk explaining why civilization is ending.

Let’s talk money.

The first week of June delivered exactly what disciplined owner-operators want to see: strong opportunities across the Southeast, Midwest, and East Coast.

A few highlights:

  • Ochlocknee, GA → Vineland, NJ: $5.22 per mile
  • Meridian, MS → Camp Hill, PA: $5.12 per mile
  • Monticello, AR → Guymon, OK: $5.07 per mile
  • Walterboro, SC → Buffalo, NY: $4.72 per mile
  • Mobile, AL → Glens Falls, NY: $5,500 total revenue
  • East Point, GA → Denver, CO: $5,500 total revenue

Not bad for a market that social media declared dead approximately 47 times this year.

🦄 Freight Unicorn Of The Week

Every week there is one load that should not be used to judge the market.

This is that load.

China, TX → Orange, TX

  • 38 miles
  • $1,000 revenue
  • $26.32 per mile

Before anybody asks where to find these loads, relax.

This is what we call a Freight Unicorn.

A rare creature usually created by:

  • Emergency freight
  • Customer rescue situations
  • Last-minute disasters
  • Somebody else’s problem becoming somebody else’s paycheck

Can you build an entire business around loads like this?

Absolutely.

For about six hours.

The truck probably spent more time collecting paperwork than actually driving.

Still, at $26.32 per mile, we feel obligated to congratulate whoever was lucky enough to receive that rate confirmation.

🌴 Florida Continues To Confuse Freight Experts

According to internet trucking economists, Florida is supposedly a freight wasteland.

The actual freight says otherwise.

Throughout the week we saw strong freight moving:

  • Florida → Texas
  • Florida → North Carolina
  • Florida → Mississippi
  • Florida → Alabama
  • Florida → Georgia
  • Northeast → Florida returns

No, Florida isn’t producing magical 2021 rates.

But it also isn’t the disaster some people keep pretending it is.

The market continues rewarding carriers that know where to position trucks and when to move them.

🏆 Dispatcher Home Run Of The Week

If we had to pick one load that perfectly combines mileage, revenue, and overall quality, the winner would be:

Ochlocknee, GA → Vineland, NJ

  • 939 miles
  • $4,900 revenue
  • $5.22 per mile

That’s the type of load that makes dispatchers walk a little taller and drivers answer the phone on the first ring.

🤡 The Weekly Doom-And-Gloom Update

Let’s check in on the professional freight pessimists.

According to Facebook:

  • Freight is dead.
  • Trucking is dead.
  • Brokers are dead.
  • Spot market is dead.
  • The economy is dead.
  • Everybody should panic.

Meanwhile, in the real world:

  • Mobile, AL → New York paid $5,500
  • East Point, GA → Denver paid $5,500
  • Lacombe, LA → Delaware paid $5,100
  • El Paso, TX → Jacksonville, FL paid $5,100
  • Tulsa, OK → South Florida paid $5,000

Strange behavior for a dead market.

At this point, the freight recession resembles one of those movie villains that gets killed in every sequel and somehow keeps coming back.

📈 What Actually Matters

The lesson remains exactly the same.

The difference between a struggling truck and a profitable truck is rarely the market itself.

It’s positioning.

It’s planning.

It’s relationships.

It’s patience.

Anybody can haul freight.

Not everybody can wait for the right freight.

The market continues rewarding operators who stay disciplined, stay flexible, and avoid emotional decisions.

The drivers chasing every load are staying busy.

The drivers chasing strategy are making money.

🎯 Big Mike’s Take

The first week of June looked considerably healthier than the internet wanted it to.

No, we’re not back to the insanity of 2021.

No, brokers aren’t throwing money around.

No, every load isn’t a winner.

But if you’re running a quality operation, maintaining service, and staying in productive freight lanes, there is still plenty of opportunity available.

The market isn’t amazing.

The market isn’t terrible.

The market is simply rewarding competence.

Which is bad news for people whose entire business strategy consists of opening DAT and praying.

See you next week.

Stay loaded.

Stay profitable.

And remember:

Hope is not a dispatch strategy.

At Voyager Nation Safety is very important

Apr. 01, 2020

Our Safety Department is not just a department that processes your logs and sends out non-compliance letters. The goal of the Safety department is to ensure that all of the people associated with Voyager Nation, Inc follow safe practices to increase the safety of our fleet in order to minimize the risk of injury, death, and property damage for the benefit of us all. In addition, the Safety department also ensures that we follow and meet all of the standards, rules, and regulations outlined by the DOT. The Voyager Nation, Inc Safety department accomplishes these goals in three ways. The first is through orientation. We put our contractors through an orientation program to help you understand our procedures and to help answer any safety related questions you may have. Secondly we monitor your safety related documents to ensure that you are not only following the DOT rules but understand those rules as they relate to you. Safety is dedicated to minimizing your risk by education; teaching you to avoid major hazards and to prepare you for emergencies in the event of an accident. It is important to understand that we cannot eliminate all of the dangerous risks from our lives but we can reduce them by following safe practices. Keeping yourself (and the general public) safe should always be your first priority. Learn to live safe practices, do not drive when you are fatigued or when you are out of hours, do not speed, always inspect your equipment (and any equipment you pull), make sure your tires are properly inflated (again on your tractor and on chassis) the actions you take just may well save your life. Remember, it is the responsibility of us all to to protect the public (as well as ourselves), against any consequence of failure or harm. We must always be vigilant against negligence and ALWAYS do our best to follow safe driving practices. The Voyager Nation, Inc Safety Department is here to help you in any area of concern.

Time on Your Side

May. 02, 2019

Aside from good communication between driver and dispatcher, drivers must truly have a good understanding of the hours of service and their own available hours along with understanding their own driving habits.  Trip planning is an essential responsibility of a driver.  OTR drivers must be able to estimate, calculate and more importantly execute the trip plan in order to be efficient.  A proper understanding increases the driver’s profitability.  Poor trip planning can increase a driver’s stress, frustration and may lead to unsafe behaviors because they feel rushed all the time.  Drivers who are good at trip planning know when to say no and then can relay to their dispatchers what they can complete in a smooth safe trip.  This will help dispatchers find loads more effectively and keep drivers happy and safe.

There are plenty of tools out there on the internet for those who are not as capable of planning their dispatched loads (ex. Trucker Path Trip planning).  However, if you can utilize just a few of the following suggestions you will increase your efficiency and profitability.

  • Understand your own hours of service availability.
  • When planning a trip calculate all the time needed for the following
    • Know your Start Time/ Know your End Time
    • Pre-trip/post-trip
    • 30 minute rest breaks between 6.5 -8 hours into your day
    • 10 hour rest breaks
    • How much drive time will I need – increase by 2 hours to give yourself a buffer.
    • Plan your fuel stops – how much fuel and when
    • Allow a minimum of 2 hours for loading and unloading
  • Know the area you are traveling
    • Weather
    • Is this a city delivery with traffic and limited parking
    • Construction ( can always look up on the web)
    • Will they allow you to stay on premises (you can always call ahead of time)

Drivers will always be responsible for knowing their own hours and making sure they arrive on time at the shipper and receiver.  Good driving habits and trip planning practices will always keep drivers legal and profitable.

Voyager Nation Improving the Fleet

Apr. 01, 2019

2019 Trailer Fleet getting a makeover! It’s all about the attention to detail that keeps the Voyager family moving in the right direction. Providing our leased owner operators with safe, reliable and presentable equipment is our business model.

Breakdowns, what you may not know.

Feb. 01, 2019

When it comes to your equipment breaking down it can cost you everything. Failing to establish a preventative maintenance schedule can cost you your lively hood. Waiting to complete those repairs and allowing them to stack up will increase your odds for a more serious breakdown, can range in severity to requiring months of downtime to just being put out of service during a roadside inspection. Now you have to be reactive and pay out of pocket for towing your equipment to the next qualified shop or having to call for roadside assistance, which we all know is highway robbery. Now Owner Operators are paying twice as much and could essentially cost you every dime you have made for the week or even the month. So now you’re working for free, worrying whether you have the money to cover the repairs. Some companies, like Voyager Nation, Inc. offer a maintenance fund were owner operators voluntarily contribute a percentage of their weekly pay and if that’s the case you may actually be in a better position than most. Other Owner Operators, after paying out their expenses barely have enough to simply put money away into a savings account for that maintenance rainy day. These costs however, can be reduce by simply establishing a regular preventative maintenance schedule. Preventative maintenance and being proactive as required by the FMCSR Part 396 can reduce the cost of maintenance by reducing the needs of emergency breakdowns, identifying current, upcoming issues and correcting them on a time table you have established, thusly, reducing your down time and maintenance costs.

Voyager Nation Successfully rolls out Voluntary Maintenance Program!

Feb. 01, 2019

Voyager Nation is a forward thinking company that is truly committed to the success of all Owner Operators. We firmly believe communication is key to the success of all true partnerships. So, we listened to the voices of Voyager Nation Owner Operators and provided a much requested savings program. The funds are contractor escrowing for the potential of mechanical failure. Creating a strong foundation that will empower and support the success of others is our mission. We will continue to listen and ensure we create strong pillars that will support the success of all affiliated partners.

The Realest Company

Dec. 31, 2018

At Voyager growth does not compromise customer service and the focus remains on the Owner Operator who is our most valuable asset.

Our dispatchers continue to work hard for you. Many fear that the bigger a company gets the personal/human interaction fades away. Contrary to what some may believe, there is no shortage of freight. With growth comes great possibilities. As our customer base continues to expand. This ensures that our dispatchers have better negotiating power ensuring that we push for the best rates for your business.

Following Distance

Dec. 31, 2018

Credit (Smith System)

Are you maintaining proper following distance?

On average the following distance for commercial vehicles should be 6-8 seconds on a perfect day.  Drivers should increase the following distance if the roads and weather conditions are not optimal.  Following distance gives drivers better visibility of the road ahead and allows them to anticipate and react as needed.  Most drivers confuse following distance and stopping distance.  Stopping distance requires drivers to identify potential hazards and react to them.  Drivers who follow to closely lose sight of the bigger picture and will only focus on what is in front of them and not giving themselves adequate space and time between the car in front, knowing they could possibly rear-end the vehicle in front of them should they stop suddenly.

By drivers seeing the big picture and maintaining the proper following distance they could reduce the 20,000 accidents that happen annually due to tail-gating.  This is only 5% of all CMV recorded accidents.  Drivers should make a conscientious effort to maintain the 6-8 sec following distance and more when necessary.

Winter Safety

Nov. 30, 2018

Voyager Nation, Inc. first priority is the safety of our drivers and those they share the road. Winter weather is already upon us. Drivers need to expect the unexpected and be prepared for anything. Be sure you have slip proof boots/shoes, extra blankets and winter clothing. Every truck should be equipped with chains, flares, flashlight, and triangles. Van drivers should make sure snow is removed from the top of their trailers this could lead to a safety risk for others as heavy snow may fly off. This may require an exterior trailer wash or other snow removal process. At no time are we requiring drivers to climb up and remove the snow themselves. Drivers should only drive if they feel they can do so in a safe manner and not put themselves or others at risk. Remember 3 points of contact when entering and exiting your truck to avoid falling.

For safety is not a gadget but a state of mind.

Owner Operators are improving the Bottom Line!

Nov. 30, 2018

Its official, The “TCS” app is out and fully functional for all Voyager Owner Operators to begin saving money. Owner Operators have experienced impressive savings across the board. One voyager alone saved $110 at the pump this week. With Holidays around the corner who can deny these kind of savings, way to save!

Here at Voyager we cultivate a team environment and there is always someone to assist – 24/7. However, did you know that every owner operator is assigned to a dedicated dispatcher? ELDs and pre 1999 trucks.

Mar. 28, 2017

We came across a few Owner-Operators who plan to purchase pre-1999 trucks to avoid ELDs. We support your way of life on the road, and not necessarily agree with an ELD mandate. Many shippers will require commercial vehicles to have electronic logging devices to load them. It will be harder to load trucks without ELDs way before the deadline. If you chose to do it still, please at least wait to see how it is after the mandate, and if it is the way you want to proceed, you got all our support. We just don’t want you to waste money on something you will not be able to use to its fullest potential, and be stuck with something that is impossible to sell.

Winter Driving Safety (Nov. 30, 2015)

Nov. 30, 2015

Winter is here with all the snow, fun and major holidays. We sincerely hope you will enjoy all the nice things it has to offer. However it brings some of the worst driving conditions and hazards to all the vehicles on the road. Here at Voyager we value safety and well being of all our drivers, their families and all the public we share the roads with. There is no load more important than you, and everyone around you. Here are some Voyager’s safety standards for winter driving:  1. No load is more important than safety, no matter what.  2. Do not let anyone pressure you.       Call our safety dept at (855) 839-5067 ext. 2 if anyone does.  3. Plan ahead.  4. Check the weather forecast.  5. Bridges and overpasses freeze before roadway.  6. Do not use cruise control if slippery.  7. Do not risk. Even if everyone else is still going.  8. If not 100% safe, just park and wait.  9. Communicate any delays with your dispatcher.  10. Any delivery can be rescheduled, peoples lives cannot.
