My CDL Just Saved My Ass… Again
Or: Why Keeping a Clean Driving Record Is the Cheapest Insurance You’ll Ever Buy.
There are few things more dangerous than driving through your own neighborhood.
Not because of criminals.
Not because of potholes.
Not because of Florida drivers.
Because the speed limit is 25 mph.
Now, let’s be honest.
I don’t think I’ve ever actually driven 25.
Twenty-six?
Probably.
Twenty-eight?
Absolutely.
Thirty?
On a wild day when my inner NASCAR driver escapes for four seconds.
I’m not exactly auditioning for Fast & Furious: HOA Edition.
So there I am, minding my own business, and I catch up to this car that’s driving like it’s transporting open buckets of nitroglycerin.
We’re approaching a speed bump.
This guy slows down so much I swear turtles were passing us.
So I do what any impatient human being who’s been in trucking too long would do.
I pass him.
Thirty seconds later…
Red and blue lights.
Well…
Shit.
Turns out Captain Sunday Drive wasn’t just another neighbor.
He was an unmarked police car.
Apparently, I had just committed the unforgivable crime of hurting his feelings.
He walks up to my window looking like I had personally insulted his family tree.
“What was THAT about?”
I honestly didn’t even know what he was talking about.
“I’m sorry, Officer. I thought you were just going really slow.”
Not exactly the answer he was hoping for.
He asks for my driver’s license.
I hand him my CDL.
Now here’s where life gets interesting.
He walks back to his car.
Five minutes later…
The man returns looking about 70% less angry.
Almost…
Professional.
He hands me my license back.
“Alright, buddy.”
“I’m just going to give you a verbal warning.”
“I don’t want to put points on your CDL.”
Ladies and gentlemen…
The CDL has entered the chat.
Now before Facebook lawyers start typing…
No.
A CDL is not a magical “Get Out of Jail Free” card.
If you’re driving like an idiot, you’ll eventually win the stupid prize that comes with it.
But here’s what I do think helped.
A clean record.
Being respectful.
Not arguing.
Not acting like every traffic stop is the Supreme Court.
When an officer sees a professional driver who’s spent years protecting his license instead of collecting speeding tickets like Pokémon cards…
Sometimes…
Just sometimes…
Common sense sneaks into the conversation.
And common sense is surprisingly refreshing these days.
Could I have gotten a ticket?
Absolutely.
Would I deserve one if I was actually speeding?
Probably.
Am I going to keep tempting fate?
Hell no.
Luck has an expiration date.
But this whole thing reminded me of something I’ve learned over the years.
Your CDL isn’t just permission to drive a truck.
It’s your reputation.
Every clean inspection.
Every ticket you don’t get.
Every time you swallow your ego instead of starting an argument…
You’re investing in that reputation.
Because one day, when life gives a police officer a choice between paperwork…
…or a warning…
That clean CDL might quietly whisper:
«”Come on, man… this one’s usually not an idiot.”»
And today…
Mine apparently did.
I’ll take the win.
Now if you’ll excuse me…
I’m going to go set my cruise control at exactly 25 mph through the neighborhood…
…for at least the next three days.
After that?
We’ll see how long my memory lasts.
