Government Freight: The Trucking Unicorn That Has Bankrupted More Dreams Than Bad Fuel Mileage
Every single week I hear it.
“Bro… you need to get into government freight.”
“Military loads are where the real money is.”
“Those guys are making a killing.”
Really?
Funny how I’ve been around this industry for decades, met thousands of owner-operators, dispatchers, fleet owners, and carriers…
…and I have yet to meet the guy who became wealthy because Uncle Sam made him rich hauling military freight.
Not one.
I’ve met plenty who talk about it.
I’ve met even more who know a guy who supposedly knows another guy.
I’ve met truck stop professors with PhDs in Bullshit Studies who can explain exactly how government freight pays six dollars a mile…
…yet somehow they’re still eating roller grill hot dogs at Love’s and arguing with strangers about DEF.
Interesting.
The Greatest Hallucination in Trucking
The trucking industry has a disease.
It’s called Unicorn Hunting.
Nobody wants to build a boring, profitable trucking business.
Everybody wants the magical load.
The magical broker.
The magical contract.
The magical government account.
The magical military freight.
The magical dedicated lane.
The magical dispatcher.
The magical customer.
There’s always some secret club where everyone else is getting rich…
…except nobody can actually point to the rich people.
That’s because most of these stories aren’t business advice.
They’re truck stop folklore.
Here’s the Part Nobody Brags About
You know what government freight is really good at?
Waiting.
Waiting for paperwork.
Waiting for security clearance.
Waiting for appointments.
Waiting for inspections.
Waiting for authorization.
Waiting because somebody in an office forgot to click a button.
Waiting because your delivery window is next Tuesday at exactly 9:17 AM.
And while you’re waiting…
Your truck payment isn’t waiting.
Your insurance isn’t waiting.
Your fuel card isn’t waiting.
Your family isn’t waiting.
The bank has absolutely zero interest in hearing about how incredible your rate per mile was.
Rate Per Mile Doesn’t Pay Bills
Revenue does.
Profit does.
Truck utilization does.
This industry has somehow convinced owner-operators to brag about rate per mile while completely ignoring revenue per week.
I’d rather haul four boring freight loads this week…
…than one legendary government load that leaves my truck parked for six days.
Because my truck only makes money when the wheels are turning.
Not when my ego is.
The Flexibility Nobody Talks About
The biggest advantage an owner-operator has isn’t a fancy trailer.
It isn’t military clearance.
It isn’t some mysterious government contract.
It’s flexibility.
Markets change.
Florida dies.
The Midwest wakes up.
Produce season starts.
Automotive slows down.
A smart owner-operator adapts before everyone else even realizes something changed.
Government freight doesn’t adapt.
It follows schedules.
Procedures.
Rules.
Layers of bureaucracy.
That’s perfectly fine if you’re a giant carrier with 700 trucks.
You can afford dead time.
You can spread the downtime across an entire fleet.
A single owner-operator?
Every empty day is another day your truck becomes the world’s most expensive lawn ornament.
The Dick-Measuring Championship
Let’s be honest.
A lot of the government freight conversation isn’t even about making money.
It’s about sounding important.
It’s trucking’s version of:
“My fish was bigger.”
“My truck has more horsepower.”
“I hauled classified military freight.”
Cool.
What was your settlement?
That’s the only measurement I care about.
Nobody deposits bragging rights into their checking account.
The Question Nobody Asks
Whenever somebody tells you government freight is where all the money is…
Ask one question.
“What was your average weekly gross over the last twelve months?”
Not the best week.
Not the coolest load.
Not the one you still tell stories about three years later.
Average.
Over a year.
Amazing how quickly the conversation changes.
Stop Chasing Ghosts
Every year thousands of owner-operators waste time chasing invisible opportunities because somebody at a truck stop said they exist.
Government freight.
Military freight.
The perfect broker.
The secret customer.
The magic lane.
It’s always just over the next hill.
Meanwhile, the guys quietly making real money aren’t chasing unicorns.
They’re keeping the truck moving.
Keeping their utilization high.
Adjusting to the market every single week.
They’re building a business instead of collecting stories.
And that’s the difference.
One guy owns a profitable trucking company.
The other owns a collection of truck stop legends.
Guess which one sleeps better when the truck payment is due.

Ready to Stop Chasing Unicorns?
If you’re an owner-operator who’s tired of truck stop fairy tales and wants to build a real business instead, let’s talk.
At Voyager Nation, we don’t chase government freight, military freight, or the latest trucking myth. We chase profitability.
We believe consistency beats hype. High truck utilization beats high rate-per-mile. Adapting to the market beats waiting for the “perfect load.”
If you’re looking for a carrier that understands what it actually takes to make money as an owner-operator, we’d love to talk.
