Freight Rates

July week 1

BIG MIKE’S FREIGHT & RATES REPORT | JULY 2026

Another week is in the books, and as always, the load board told a story.

The problem?

Most owner-operators only read the first page.

Professional dispatchers read the entire book.

Anybody can find one decent-paying load. The real money comes from knowing where that load is going to position your truck two days later.

So let's look at what actually happened.

♟️

 Checkmate of the Week

If there was one pattern that kept showing up over and over, it was this:

Use Florida to launch into productive freight markets... then don't rush back.

Take this sequence.

➡️

 Orlando, FL → Cullman, AL
608 miles
$2.63 per mile

Instead of chasing home, another truck continued deeper.

➡️

 DeLand, FL → Springfield, MO
1,088 miles
$2.76 per mile

Another truck...

➡️

 Tampa, FL → Sellersburg, IN
826 miles
$2.66 per mile

Once you're sitting in the Midwest, suddenly your options explode.

That's not luck.

That's positioning.

🦄

 Freight Unicorn of the Week

Every week somebody asks...

"Big Mike... where are the $6 and $7 per mile loads?"

They're right here.

Middleburg, FL → Tifton, GA

165 miles.

$5.87 per mile.

Then we had:

Lakeland → Homestead

244 miles.

$5.56 per mile.

And yes...

There were even a couple of tiny local unicorns paying over $8 and even $9 per mile, but before everyone loses their minds...

Those are extremely short repositioning moves, not loads you build a business around.

The lesson?

Stop chasing unicorns.

Position yourself where unicorns appear.

Huge difference.

💀

 Dead Freight Cemetery

Now for the part Facebook never talks about...

Markets that make dispatchers nervous.

Colorado paid...

But notice what happened.

Denver → Georgia...

Golden → Tennessee...

Those trucks needed strong outbound planning before they ever accepted those loads.

The same goes for Wyoming.

Yes...

Gillette, WY → Port Canaveral paid over $5,100, but only because someone already knew how to get that truck back into a productive market.

Remember...

A great-paying load into a weak market can become an average-paying week.

Never judge one load by itself.

Judge the entire week.

🔥

 Big Mike's Hot Take

Can we finally retire one of the dumbest sentences in trucking?

"I don't move for less than four dollars a mile."

Really?

Then explain why your truck hasn't moved since Wednesday.

Some owner-operators are so obsessed with protecting their rate that they completely destroy their revenue.

You don't make truck payments with dollars per mile.

You make truck payments with dollars in your bank account.

I'll take three profitable dispatch decisions over one Facebook screenshot every single time.

Because freight doesn't care about your pride.

The market doesn't negotiate with your feelings.

🎯

 Lane to Watch Next Week

Here are the patterns I'd be watching very closely this week.

✅

 Florida → Alabama

✅

 Florida → Tennessee

✅

 Carolinas → Texas

✅

 Pennsylvania → Florida

✅

 Ohio → Florida

✅

 Midwest → Southeast

One week never guarantees the next.

But when multiple trucks keep finding success on similar corridors...

Experienced dispatchers pay attention.

📚

 Dispatch Lesson of the Week

Never evaluate a load by itself.

Evaluate the next three loads before you even book the first one.

Professional dispatchers aren't asking...

"Is this a good load?"

They're asking...

"What does this load allow me to do next?"

That's where the money is hiding.

🤣

 Broker Excuse of the Week

Broker:

"That's all my customer will pay."

Funny how...

Thirty minutes later...

The exact same load magically pays another $400 after your dispatcher says,

"No thanks."

Apparently customers become much more generous when the pickup appointment gets close.

Amazing how that works.

🏆

 Owner-Operator IQ Test

You're sitting in Tampa on Monday morning.

You have two offers.

Option A

Tampa → Georgia

420 miles

$4.60 per mile

No reload lined up.

Option B

Tampa → Indiana

825 miles

Around $2.65 per mile

With multiple Midwest reload opportunities already showing.

Which one makes you more money by Friday?

Think about it before scrolling.

...

...

...

The answer?

Nobody knows for sure.

And that's exactly the point.

Great dispatchers don't compare loads.

They compare weeks.

One expensive load can absolutely lose to three smart ones.

Final Thoughts

If you're reading these reports every Monday and trying to copy our lane strategy...

Honestly...

Good.

That means you're thinking like a dispatcher instead of a steering wheel holder.

But remember...

You're only seeing the winning moves.

You're not seeing the dozens of phone calls, market analysis, broker negotiations, weather checks, reload planning, and contingency plans that happened before those loads were ever booked.

That's the difference between booking freight...

...and managing a business.

If you're tired of guessing and you'd rather have a dispatch team that's already playing three moves ahead...

Give Voyager a call.
