Freight Rates

August week 1

BIG MIKE’S FREIGHT & RATES REPORT | August 2026

Good morning, Owner-Operators. Let's see what the freight market is trying to tell us this week.

---

🚛

 Overall Market

The market continues to reward short-haul freight. The top of the board is absolutely dominated by freight under 300 miles, while many long-haul lanes are still paying in the low-$2s or even below.

If you're still chasing 1,200-1,500-mile loads hoping they'll magically make you rich, this report says otherwise.

---

🦄

 Freight Unicorn of the Week

🥇

Orlando, FL → Polk City, FL

38 miles

$550

$14.47 per mile

No, that's not a typo.

Runner-up:

Tampa → Orlando

72 miles

$700

$9.72 per mile

These are the kinds of loads dispatchers dream about.

---

🔥

 Hot Regional Markets

Several markets stood out this week:

Central Florida

Tampa

Orlando

Panama City

North Carolina

Georgia

Tennessee

Ohio

There are plenty of opportunities to string together profitable short- and medium-haul freight.

---

💀

 Dead Freight Cemetery

Some lanes continue to disappoint.

Examples include:

Tampa → Fort Mill, SC — $1.41/mi

Lakeland → Huntsville, AL — $1.75/mi

Sarasota → Richburg, SC — $1.86/mi

Plant City → Dillon, SC — $1.87/mi

Lakeland → Meridian, MS — $1.95/mi

If your dispatcher accepts these without a plan to recover on the backhaul, somebody needs to start asking questions.

---

📈

 Best Long-Haul Opportunities

Not every long trip was bad.

Some winners:

Athens, TN → Fort Drum, NY

930 miles

$4,400

$4.73/mi

Memphis → Fort Myers, FL

918 miles

$4,000

$4.36/mi

Durham, NC → Worcester, MA

657 miles

$2,800

$4.26/mi

Good long-haul freight still exists—you just have to be selective.

---

🌴

 Florida Watch

Florida continues to produce strong outbound freight.

Examples include:

Orlando → Polk City — $14.47/mi

Tampa → Orlando — $9.72/mi

Tampa → Palm Bay — $5.99/mi

Tampa → West Palm Beach — $5.73/mi

Panama City → Fulton, MS — consistently above $4.00/mi

Jacksonville → Gibsonton — $4.46/mi

That's why we continue to tell Owner-Operators:

Don't judge Florida by DAT averages. Judge it by execution.

---

🧠

 Dispatch Lesson of the Week

This report proves something we've been saying for years.

A truck making six short, profitable moves can outperform another truck that drives halfway across America for mediocre rates.

Revenue is measured in dollars—not windshield time.

🔄

 Adapt or Go Broke

Here's one of the biggest mistakes I see Owner-Operators make.

Right now, the market is rewarding short-haul freight. If you can make great money running 200-300 miles a day...

Absolutely do it.

Take advantage of every opportunity the market gives you.

But don't fall asleep at the wheel.

Markets change.

There will come a time when those short, high-paying loads dry up. When that happens, don't sit there saying, "I'm not leaving town unless it's five dollars a mile."

That's how businesses die.

Successful Owner-Operators don't marry one strategy—they adapt.

If the market shifts and the money moves to 700- or 1,000-mile runs, then you adjust. Maybe you're making a little less per mile, but you're keeping the truck moving, maintaining your cash flow, and protecting your business.

Too many Owner-Operators go bankrupt because they're chasing yesterday's market instead of today's.

They keep cutting their runs shorter... 300 miles becomes 200... then 150... then 100... all while the revenue keeps getting worse. They're holding on to memories of the good old days instead of adapting to reality.

The trucking industry doesn't pay you for being stubborn. It pays you for adapting faster than everyone else.

That's one of the biggest differences between the Owner-Operators who survive every market cycle and those who disappear when the market changes.

 Big Mike's Reality Check

I keep hearing people say,

"Everyone who built a trucking company years ago was just lucky. Rates were so much better back then."

Really?

Take a look at this report.

We're looking at $4, $5, $6, even $14 per mile freight.

When I was an owner-operator, I couldn't even dream about seeing a report like this. If somebody had handed me a list with dozens of loads paying over four dollars a mile, I would've thought they were kidding.

Yes, there were good years. But there were also years with cheap freight, expensive fuel, breakdowns, slow-paying brokers, and carriers going out of business every single week.

The people who built successful trucking companies weren't simply lucky because they started earlier. Plenty of people started at the same time and failed.

The difference was discipline.

They controlled expenses. They built relationships. They learned their freight. They survived the bad years and were ready when the good opportunities came.

So before saying, "They were just lucky," ask yourself a different question:

If freight paying $4, $5, $6, and even $14 a mile exists today, what am I doing to position my truck to haul it?

Complaining has never booked a load.

Execution has.

---

😂

 Broker Excuse of the Week

> "It's a great reload market."

Translation:

"We couldn't pay enough on this load, but maybe somebody else will."

 Big Mike's Hot Take

The data doesn't lie.

The carriers making money today aren't necessarily running the most miles.

They're running the right miles.

That's why at Voyager Nation we focus on freight planning—not just freight booking.

Anyone can find a load.

Very few know how to build an entire profitable week.

Owner-Operators don't get paid for miles.

They get paid for decisions.

Stay safe, stay profitable, and I'll see you in the next Big Mike's Voyager Freight Report.
